Bedtime Stories: Birds and Birds
06 Feb 2012Post by Mark T. Locker
We have been reading a lot of books about birds around here lately. Watching bird documentaries, looking for birds in the yard, practicing bird calls and bird dances. So today I bring you two stories about birds to read in bed. Enjoy!
Weird Birds by Carmen Bredeson.
I have a hard time finding factual books that are neither too simple nor too full of text. The easy ones have almost no information (“This is a bird. Birds have feathers.”) and the more advanced ones have far more text than I can read out loud. This book is a great middle ground. And, it talks about how weird some birds are and I love weird stuff. Kiwis, cassowaries, killdeer and many more are discussed in this colorful, informative and short but not too short book.
Boo Hoo Bird by Jeremy Tankard.
The grumpy bird from Grumpy Bird is back! This time he has been bonked on the head while playing catch with his friend. And no amount of care from his friends can make this overreacting bird feel better. “I’m getting dizzy!” “I can hardly walk!” he moans. When his friends get upset that they can’t help him, Bird realizes that maybe they made him feel better after all. Everyone in the book is ridiculously adorable. Read it just for the sheep.
