How to Make a Small Bedroom Seem Spacious

Many of us must contend with bedrooms that are less than palatial. However, the best solution is not always painting the walls white and selecting small furniture in order to make the room feel larger. Instead, try these tips to trick the eye:
• Cultivate a sense of scale. No, you don’t have to sleep in a tiny twin bed, but you should eliminate unnecessary furniture. For example, do you really need two nightstands? Stick to the essentials; a couple of well proportioned items will make a room feel larger than several smaller pieces.
• Keep the floor plane clear. Choose a bed frame with legs that provide at least one foot clearance above the floor, and don’t clutter the space beneath. When you can see a large expanse of the floor, the room feels more open and airy.
• Establish a focal point. In a bedroom, the obvious choice for an ‘accent wall’ is the wall behind the bed. Select an elaborate headboard design that catches the eye, or paint the wall a bold color to attract attention.
• Draw the eye upward. Hang floor to ceiling drapes, or add vertical shelving along one wall. Not only will you reduce visual clutter, but the room will feel taller, and in turn more spacious.
• Incorporate mirrors. One of the easiest ways to trick the eye is to hang mirrors, which bounce natural light around the room and create a dense of depth. Try a freestanding floor length mirror or line an entire wall.
