For thousands of years people had no issue with their mattresses sleeping warm. And then foam came along. Ubiquitous and inexpensive it appeared to solve everybody’s comfort issues. It was new. It was a technology easy to manufacture easy to deliver just squash it in a box. The traditional materials were quickly outdated... No need to sheer a sheep Australia when you could pour some foam in New Jersey! What was not considered was that foam with its cellular structure was a body-heat retaining sponge. With overheating complaints adding up, manufacturers began looking for solutions. Much effort was spent on “cooling chemistry” but without a mechanical way of actually removing the heat from the mattress no system would make a real difference.
At Charles P. Rogers, we were never major users of synthetic foams, but we depended on natural latex for comfort layers. Latex is much better most foams for airflow but it shares the same basic characteristics as any cellular material and will still retain more heat than fibers like cotton or wool. These were the traditional choices for a comfortable mattress but they lack the bounce and responsive feel of foam. We saw this issue within the industry, and that is why we designed a line of mattresses, the Rogers 1855 collection, to combine traditional materials with modern technology to produce a comfortable mattress with a contemporary feel and absolutely no foam to retain heat. Multiple layers of tuned innerspring coils provide progressive support while the wool and cotton upholstery provides a luxurious experience that is old fashioned and inviting. The innerspring layers provide a clear path for continuous air circulation through the mattress. Truly cool comfort you can trust is hard to come by.
